The word translation in French means transfer.
Taking this double meaning as a starting point, the artist Diane Guyot de Saint Michel (Marsella, 1980) presents a series of works in which language, and its interpretation, plays an essential role.
After organizing workshops and residences in different contexts and circumstances with various collectives, the artist decides to explore the power of language and its capacity to generate misinterpretations.
At the entrance of the gallery we find a thermal liner from a container. This material, used for the transport of products (the one in the gallery is used to transport alcohol), creates a tunnel that inevitably one has to go through. Once outside the tunnel, we discover crash barriers from motorways with messages carved in, banners with images and texts and posters of an aerial image of Marignane, a city near Marseille, which have been modified by her with the help of participants in one of her performances (Florida Park, 2015).
These messages when transferred to certain objects take another dimension and a different connotation. The crash barriers or the thermal liner that initiates the exhibition, emulate the transport of people and products. The artist stages different problems and contradictions that can be generated when transferring (or translating) messages.
The work of Diane Guyot revolves around language and how this is given out. The artist uses posters, t- shirts, flags, among other supports, to communicate provocative messages, often ironic, to speak about power relations intrinsic to language and question them.
*Coinciding with the exhibition I love U jungle, the artists Diane Guyot and Fred Pradeau will present an intervention and an activity at Ocaña, in Plaça Reial, on Saturday 30/09 from 7.30pm.
